Tips for Boosting Your Immunity Through Nutrition

We’ve made it through most of flu season and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel with the warm weather this week. But, causing an additional amount of fear this year is COVID-19, the novel coronavirus. To help lessen your anxiety, here are some tips for boosting your immune system and fighting off any germs that you may encounter.

VITAMIN C helps to boost your immune system by encouraging the production of white blood cells and fighting infection! You may have already gone out and bought a pack of Emergen-C, but don’t forget, there are so many incredible and delicious, natural sources of vitamin C. Eat a variety of foods high in vitamin C such as:

  • Oranges
  • Grapefruit
  • Kiwifruit
  • Red bell peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Cantelope
  • Kale
  • and Cauliflower!

PROTEIN is another important key to building your immunity, and most sources of protein also contain ZINC. This pair work together to support your immune system in keeping you healthy. Eat a variety of proteins with high biological value such as:

  • Chicken Soup
  • Legumes
  • Nuts
  • Lamb
  • Beef
  • Seeds
  • Yogurt
  • Eggs

SPICE IT UP! Lots of spices are good for fighting inflammation and boosting your immunity! They can also clear congestion! Use some of these items in your cooking:

  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Turmeric
  • Cinnamon
  • Jalapeños
  • Ginger
  • Sage

PROBIOTICS are the good bacteria that can fight away the bad bacteria on a microscopic level! There are plenty of healthy food items that contain these good bacteria such as:

  • Tea with honey
  • Yogurt
  • Kefir
  • Miso Soup
  • Kombucha

And of course, don’t forget to stay HYDRATED! Make sure to drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of fluid each day!
